http://books.google.com/books?id=-xwqemn... Yes, there are millions and millions of different kinds and species. Most of them are not edible by humans.
. I am a former chef, and besides seaweeds there are things known as sea beans or sea asparagas, a member of the seaweed family, they look like the land cousins.
Most of the sea vegetables are sold dried or in a non fresh form, the sea beans/asparagas are small green and only need a blanching and then quick saute with butter, no salt they tend to be salty enough.
From sushi seaweeds, to seaweeds used for salads, thickeners for ice creams and gelling agents, I like some of the Japanese one, even those made into a seasoning mix with sesame seeds, chili peppers, citrus peel, hemp seeds and other seasoning and peppers.
