Why do they call it chicken fried steak?!
Why do they call it chicken fried steak?
there's nothing chicken about it
Answers: Chicken-fried or country-fried steak is usually made with round steak, tenderized then dipped in an egg and milk mixture, then dredged in seasoned flour or bread crumbs. The coated steak is then fried in hot fat until the coating is crispy and browned, much like fried chicken. A milk gravy is often made to be served with the steak, along with mashed potatoes.
Country fried steak can also be made by coating the tenderized steaks with seasoned flour or crumbs. Smothered steak, another version, is fried then simmered in gravy, which makes a tougher cut of meat even more tender.

Marinate it in buttermilk, season it, coat it with flour, and then pan fry it, and serve it with peppery bechamel sauce. Because it's coated with flour and salt and pepper before it's fried, just like you would do if you were frying chicken. But, you're right - there's no chicken in it. Like everyone said...its because of the batter.
But its still pretty stupid...we don't call Mozzarella sticks 'chicken fried cheese'!!

This chicken fried steak can be deep fried after dipped in batter, or seasoned flour. Or you can season and tenderize the steak and since it cooks fast you beat 2 eggs in a bowl. In another bowl you crush up either Town house cracker or Ritz which ever you prefere, just enough to cover the meat. You pass the meat into the egg mix then you roll it in the crushed crackers and fry. This is good for skirt steak, cubed steak or pieces of sandwich steak. Because it is battered and fried like chicken.
