Why do certain brands change their name in different regions of the country like Hardee's/Carls Jr?!

Question:

Why do certain brands change their name in different regions of the country like Hardee's/Carls Jr?

Also like Dreyers on the West Coast is Edy's on the East coast. Carls Jr on the West Coast is Hardees on the East coast. What other ones can you think of? Why would they do this? My thought is that if something like an E Coli scare happens to Carls Jr the East coast market will still appear safe under the hardee's name.

Answers: Most often it is because they was a corporate buyout, eg. Hardees and Carl Jrs used to be different companies and one was bought by the other. Since the brand is known in that area, it doesn't get changed so as to not alienate the consumers. Another example is Krystal & White Castle

It's a franchisee thing
