Onions come in three colors...red, yellow, and white. There are many varieties of each color. basically not much except the color.However,they are a little milder than straight white or yellow onions.Red is usually used in salads for the color and mildness.There are sweet onion that are even milder.Hope this helps Just like with potatoes there are many different kinds of onions available.
A red onion is also known as a sweet red onion. The flavor is more mellow and a tad bit sweeter. Often used raw.
There is also yellow onions and white onions. These are pretty much interchangable in recipes. the yellow ones are cheaper than the white ones.
And dont forget the lovely green ones, used as a garnish or in stirfry etc. red onions don't burn your eyes.
