How do you know if mussels are safe to eat?!

Question:

How do you know if mussels are safe to eat?

I ate 5 at a buffet 2 weeks ago and they came back up about a half hour later (explosively). Made me sick with fever and stomach cramps for 3-4 days.

I like how they taste, but I don't want to risk getting wrecked up again.

Answers: Check their smell. Any kind of shellfish or seafood for that matter has a foul smell when they are bad. Cooked or not, you'll know the bad smell. remember the three C's. Cold, Cut, and Clean.
The shell should be clean, the meat should be cut from the shell, and they should be served very cold on ice. I don't eat them, but I was watching the Food Channel very late one night.
