Question:

What does it mean when they say a vegetable is "organic"?

in the supermarket, the label in the packing says "organic". how is it different from the regular ones?

Answers: There are (or at least - should be) strict rules and criteria that determine whether some food is organic or not.
Organic products must meet certain standards.
When product have label "organic", it means that they were inspected.
For example, standards for field where organic vegetables/plants are growing:
* to be free of commercial fertilizers for three years
* to be free of herbicides for three years
* seed would not be from genetically modified seed
* to include a buffer zone between organic plants and non-organic plants.
Organic meat comes from animals that are kept in natural, free range conditions. The land where organic animals are kept or where their feed is grown must not be sprayed with pesticides or herbicides. Preventative antibiotics, as regularly used for example in conventional pig farming, cannot be used in organic livestock. No genetically modified crops or ingredients are allowed on organic farms.
Official definition of organic is:
"Organic agriculture is an ecological production management system that promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. It is based on the minimal use of off-farm inputs and utilizes management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony. 'Organic' is a labeling term that denotes products produced under the authority of the Organic Foods Production Act. The principal guidelines for organic production are to use materials that enhance the ecological balance of natural systems and that integrate the parts of the farming system into an ecological whole." http://www.ota.com/definition/nosb.html... it means no pesticides were used. they use different methods to keep plant eating bugs off and they may have used more natural means of fertilizers than other companies. instead of throwing a bunch of poison on it. It means that the fruit/vegetable/ or meat/poultry products were produced or raised, harvested and or manufactured without the use of chemical fertilizers, or other veterinary drugs.

its like having these food stuff grow naturally. some organic chicken, for example, are grown not in cages but are free ranged.

organic vegetables are grown with animal manure or compost as fertilizers.
