Answers: Hi, This answer will depend on where you are lucky enough to live! as the Chinese Take away might just make dishes to western tastes, or if you live in a large city with a Chineses community you may be lucky enough to get authentic dishes.
The Chinese people love to have a banquet. A whole seriese of dishes to be shared amongst their guests. Taking the most succulent pieces to give to an hounored guest. The meal will last hours and be a complete mixture of meats, fish, noodles, rice, soup served towards the end of the meal, and fruit and tea to finish.
If you are just looking for something to eat on your own, choose one of the set meals for one or two people. You can save the rest for tomorrow in the fridge. Ask the person in the take away, what is in the dish, It is usually described with the ingredients. Spring rolls(or pancake rolls) are a nice starter. They are a crispy pancake wrapper containing a mixture of beansprouts and a small amount of other ingredients, meat, prawns, bamboo shoots etc. depending on the cooks preferances. They are nice dipped in a little soy sauce or chilli or sweet and sour sauce.
Barbequed spare ribs are tasty. (this is pork, which you may not want to eat) Sweet and sour king pranws are a favourite of mine. Beansprouts, Steamed rice. Stir fried beef and green peppers in black bean sauce, with noodles. Some chicken and mushroom soup, or Wan tun soup which is a light clear meat or chicken stock soup with little pasta parcels containing a meat filling. ( Again if you dont eat pork ask about this as pork is used a great deal in chinese cooking)
The best thing to do is order your favourite dishes excet one, and make a new choise for that adventerous move. If you like it great! then next week try something else new.
Dim Sum are little mouth full sized, savoury, snacks that come in a whole variety of ingredients. I love them. But what ever you do, do not order jelly fish! You would probably only get this on the menue in China or a real China town resturant in europe or the states. It is not nice. It has a slimey, slightly salty texture and taste but is as chrunchy as a raw carrot. Altogether a very strange eating experience. I hope i have not put you off your meal.
Enjoy it X Source(s):
Born in Hong Kong. Love Chinese food. mmmm chicken with oyster sauce and egg friend rice I can recommend Sweet and Sour Chicken or Char Sui Chow Mein ( Noodles and vegetables with strips of pork ) Salted chilli ribs
chicken chow mein with satay sauce
banana fritter
yum yum !!!!! I either have mushroom or chicken foo yung, or Singapore chow mein. There are loads of things on the Chinese menu I have never tried.
Mind you, the average Chinese takeaway does not serve authentic Chinese food anyway. I always go for the 69 its my favourite.......... I get fried dumplings, Egg rolls, won-ton soup, Sesame chicken, or general Tao's chicken. California rolls
Peppered chicken
Chicken and Broccoli
Crab Rangoons
Spare ribs We order things like:

Peking Spare Ribs
Pancake Rolls
Prawn Toasts
Chicken in black bean sauce
Crispy Beef
Aromatic Crispy Duck - my husbands absolute favourite!
Special Chow Mein
Special Fried Rice
Sweet n Sour Pork Balls

All SCRUMPTIOUS! beef/broccoli......shrimp fried rice, egg roll I always have plain chow mein and curry sauce with vegetarian spring rolls... yummy... xx My "usual" is special fried rice, but I recently tried some of the "dishes with beansprouts". The Chicken and Beef with beansprouts was very nice. I tried chicked with cashews and that was VERY filling.

Deep fried shredded beef in chilli sauce is another favourite of mine. Failing that it would be the "normal" stuff like foo yung, sweet & sour and chow mein. depends which one i am ordering from . my faves: vegetarian fried rice , combination sate , mixed vegetables , honey prawns , steamed dim sims , spicy calimari , beef and blak bean , beef and three kind of mushrooms , combination short and long soup . we had a chinese last nite!!!! my bf didnt ask me what i wanted and just picked it up on his way over....so it was nothing that i would have chosen....a chicken curry each with egg friend rice and a singapore chow mein....lovliest meal ive had all month....i never pick curry from chinese but it was delicious and the chow mein was really spicey....give it a go! when i used to eat meat i lurrved lemon chicken! I still crave it 14 years on! lemon chicken and chips! mmmmm general tso is what i usually get its really good, like sort of fried chicken in a sauce... also Pepper Steak is nice and it taste more american then a lot of the stuff so just about everyone would like it, Its big peices of onion and green peppers with slices of beef in some kind of sauce stuff. And pork fried rice afraid i am the same as you always stick to the same which is beef and mushroom curry and egg fried rice i can sit for ages with the menu in front of me but always end up with the same Chicken and cashew nuts
Chicken curry
Chow Mein
Beef with black bean sauce
Sweet and Sour Pork
Spare ribs Read the menu I find Chinese differ from one to another try them for yourself or better still ask some friends over & try what they have How can this possibly help you? All these things are on the menu and people typing the names of Chinese food isn't going to tell you if you like it or not. Try going through the whole menu, one bit at a time and rate it, jot your own description down next to the name and try something else next time. That way you'll know what everything is in your own words and you'll know what you'll like. We always get the same too,Prawn Toast,Curry Puffs, Honey chicken,Beef and Blackbean or Mongolian Lamb.I have been eating chinese for yrs and the last time we went I actually tried Deep Fried Icecream and I love it. Try chilli chicken (or beef) if you like your food spicy :-) If you prefer something milder then try lemon chicken or sweet and sour chicken (or pork). Sweet and Sour Chicken or Pork;
General Tsu Chicken;
Pork Egg Foo Young;
Kung Pau Chicken;
Schezuan Beef;
Hunan Beef;
Orange Chicken Mushroom chow mien for the bulk dish, and I usually accompany it with deep fried shredded chili beef and/or chili & salt king prawns depending on if I'm sharing or not. Any satay dish, it is kind of spicy and nutty. Tastes different than a lot of chineses sauces. And I order barbecue ribs as a side dish and sometimes noodles instead of rice. Try it ,it is lovely. I always go in, look at the menu and then order my regular lol ....Gen.Tso's Chicken mmmmmmmmmm =) So many yummy things. Beef Lo Mein, shimp with lobster sauce, chicken chow mein, fried won ton, BBQ ribs, sweet and sour chicken, general tso's chicken. I could go on and on and on and on and on Salted brocoli and Peking duck c u m drop soup I usually get chicken curry with fried rice or chicken and mushroom with fried rice. I always go for the spare ribs but don't know whats in it
