How long can you keep chopped walnuts?!

Question:

How long can you keep chopped walnuts?

i bought a bag of chopped walnuts about 6 months ago. i opend the bag and useed some and have kept them in the refrigerator. they look okay, and taste just a wee bit different than normal, but do you think they are still good to use in banana bread?

Answers: So far you've done well to keep them so long,...walnuts and nuts in general do go bad and they are said to be rancid when that occurs. The freshness disappears and they take on a fatty wax taste and even sometimes give off a bad odor as well. If you have smelled them and they seem okay,...yes, banana bread would be fine with them. A better way to keep nuts would be in an air-tight container in the freezer.
A tip though is if you want to, roast the nuts on a cookie tray in a very hot oven til they are toasted this will prolong shelf life as well.
Good luck, and good cooking :o) I hope so; at the price, I have a habit of putting the unused bits in the freezer from time to time! Pity the pecans, I guess! I've kept some for much longer than 6 months, with no ill effects (and in banana nut bread, the bananas rule the flavor) and no complaints, either! No your fine
if you had a tree you might toss last years out for the birds as you fix this years harvest.
any way I always blanch walnuts they are too bitter for me.
