They're best together (brownie sundae!). I don't think you can really say one is better for you than the other. In food, chocolate is a primary ingredient. You can eat it on its own. Vanilla is a flavor, used in small amounts.

Some interesting facts? Well, vanilla is grown in the tropical areas of Mexico, Indonesia, parts of Africa, and some other pacific islands (not a complete list). When the bean pods are picked, they look kind of like really long green beans. They are cured and end up shriveled and dark brown. When used in cooking, they are split and the seeds are mixed into food. The seeds are tiny. They are barely visible and look more like dust than plant seeds. The empty seed pods can be put in sugar to give the sugar flavor, or they can be tossed in with sauces as they simmer to give them some flavor.

And now, for some chocolate trivia! Chocolate beans grow in pods. Between picking and the chocolate we see, they go through a long, complex process of drying, roasting, grinding, melting, mixing, and so on. It only starts to taste good at the very end of the process. The earlier forms of chocolate are bitter and don't have a very appealing texture, either.

At one point in processing, the cocoa butter and cocoa powder are separated. In making chocolate, varying amounts of cocoa butter and other fats are mixed with the cocoa powder. The more cocoa butter and less other fats used, the better the chocolate. Some cheap "chocolate" contains no cocoa butter at all, and the taste suffers for it. In fact, I think there are some legal requirements for cocoa butter content in chocolate, but I can't remember the details right now.

Chocolate has been used in beverages by people in latin america for a LONG time (think, Aztecs). But, it's a far cry from instant hot cocoa. Most people wouldn't like it, especially if they were expecting something like the chocolate like we eat today.
