Apple Pie with cheese.?!

Question: I remember my grandfather always eating his apple pie with sharp cheddar cheese on it, and I know there is a name for it, and we have tried to come up with what its called without success. I know apple pie with ice cream is pie ala mode, but there is also a name for apple pie with cheese. I always thought it was gross, when Grandpa would eat it, but I di try it today, just for the heck of it, and it is good. Not something I will always do, but for a change of pace, it really didn't taste bad. First one to answer correctly gets the points. Thanks in advance.

My Grandparents as well used to do this as well, and thought it was bizarre myself. They told me it was what they grew up on in England. Called a Yorkshire Apple Pie, although I think they made that part up. Did research it, and Wikki offers this paragraph on the subject:

English apple pie recipes go back to the time of Chaucer. The 1381 recipe lists the ingredients as good apples, good spices, figs, raisins and pears. The cofyn of the recipe is a casing of pastry. Saffron is used for colouring the pie filling.

A traditional way to serve apple pie, particularly in Yorkshire, is with cheese. This adds a deep flavor. This is commonly a hard crumbly cheese such as Cheshire when served separately or Cheddar when cooked as a layer within the pie.

In Commonwealth countries, apple pie is a dessert of enduring popularity, eaten hot or cold, on its own or with ice cream, double cream, or custard

Hope this somewhat helps:)
Apple pie with cheddar cheese is quite common in New England. There's even a saying about it: Apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze! Report It

  • Ruined apple pie is my answer.
You know, I don't think it really has a name - I do think it's local to people who live in the New England states, though.

It's not ruined - it's just like eating fruit and cheese, and it's delicious - there are some recipes for baking the cheese right inside the pie, and also making a cheese crust.
I have to admit I don't know what it's called but I can tell you that years ago (like about 30) in the state of Wisconsin it was illegal to serve apple pie without cheese! The law is probably not enforced anymore but I remember it.
Actually it is a regional (Yorkshire) English custom, but it probably made its way here with immigrants; nothing odd about it.

No name that I know of.
travis bickle ordered this in the movie "taxi driver". i always figured it was a new york thing. i don't know of a particular name for it, though.
