How can I eat a reasonably healthy diet on $10 a week or less?!


Question: By "reasonably healthy" I just mean nutritious enough to avoid malnutrition. I wouldn't want to get scurvy ;)
Most $10 or $20 a week menu plans I have seen seem to be based on the assumption that I already have a fully stocked pantry. My pantry is not totally empty, but all the menus seem to contain quite a few items that I don't have on hand. There are several excellent online menus for families, but I'm single, and when those menus are scaled down for one person, they become much more expensive (and wasteful). Can you show me a balanced menu that works?

Like someone else said, foodstamps are a good idea. Are you a "poor college student"? Events hosted by the college sometimes includes free food. You could also check out the campus ministries (if there are any) - sometimes they have free suppers.
Oatmeal is good for you - I'd buy the slow cook oatmeal and take the time to cook a batch at night and reheat it in the morning. It's not only more economical, but it will keep you feeling fuller than the quick cook variety because it is whole grains.
Sphagetti w/ butter or little can of tomato sauce is a good choice. Sometimes you can buy mac & cheese for 25cents a box. If you buy frozen vegetables you can mix it with ramen noodles or brown rice (brown rice is obviously more healthy/will keep you full longer because its whole grain) for stir fry. if you add some peanut butter it will give you protein. Also, if you buy frozen fruit (or buy fruit on sale) you can freeze it. grapes freeze well... you can have a handful or so a day. If you have some extra money and have a friend with a sams club card, you can buy frozen corn dogs or chicken nuggets relatively cheaply and if you only eat the serving size (4 or 5).
Make sure you are getting at least two servings of dairy a day - milk or cottage cheese if on sale (i love yogurt but it is more expensive) and five servings of fruit/veggies....
Another question is how long are you planning on eating for $10/week?

Make big dishes and just freeze them and eat them the next week.

Easy, for one, a box of ceral should last a week. Then get a gallon of milk. Get a pack of bologna and a loaf of bread, jar of mustard. For dinner, have a cup of buillion for soup, along with toast to go with it. You can get fancy and mix in some rice with the broth. You can have 3 meals a day on $10 a week. Get the cereal in the dollar store. You can get a thing of bologna for 99 cents. I bought 2 loaves of bread today for 99 cents for TWO. You can get a small bag of rice for under a dollar that will mix in with the buillion cubes. They would probably be the most expensive thing, the buillion cubes. I think you may have some left over from the TEN and you can get some apples, even a bag of them if you have enough left over or buy a few and cut them in pieces. You CAN live on $10 a week on food if you are really serious.
I know how you can survive on 5 dollars a week.

Two words: Instant Ramen
Look into getting food stamps. I think they now give you a card that looks like a credit card (they no longer give you stamps).

Some churches give out food baskets, or they can tell you were to go to pick up food.

Here are a few things to look in on:

Breakfast:
Box of oatmeal packages-there are 12 packages in the plain oatmeal.
Heat 1/2 cup of water and pour over oatmeal, let it sit for a couple of minutes.

There is also Cream of Wheat in packages if you want to change. Heat the same as above. Check the number of packages.

Grits come the same as above. Check the number of packages in the box.

Lunch:
Peanut butter on bread/or crackers/or eat out of the spoon.

Cheese

Canned tuna fish.

Supper:

You can buy and cook meats or chicken and divide them up into several meals.

Potatoes baked or mashed.

Cereal, or hot cereal.
