the juice that the clam secretes is usually caustic enough that it will melt its own hair off, as long as you have a knack for getting the clam to secrete.

Just grab hold and yank. If that doesn't work, get a stiff bristled brush and scrub! Be very careful that all the clams are fresh and alive. Don't eat any that don't open
