It is the chromosomes that are made up of genes
Each gene has characteristics that follow through it's species as a dominant or recessive gene, Pure color genes
keep the same color, crossw genes, Recessive/dominiant, Cause variatuions in Color.

But A red delicious apple will always be red, because that color gene is pure
A granny Smith will always be green because that color gene is pure.

But anything that is manipulated through cross polination, or by tree grafting, can cause any type of color or characteristics.
