Tootsie Pops - What do the stars mean?!

Question: People are always excited to get the star on their Tootsie Pop wrapper because everyone says if you get enough you can "win prizes". Is this fact or fiction?

If it's a fact, how many do you need? What do you get? How?

Some stores will honor this rumor, but it is not true. One response to a customer's inquiry on the matter:

" Thank you for your interest in our Tootsie Pop wrappers. We are pleased to have an opportunity to tell the true story about our Tootsie Pop wrappers.

Many years ago, a rumor surfaced that said if the wrapper of a Tootsie Pop with a star was found and returned to the company, a free Tootsie Pop, or any number of things would be sent to the lucky person. We truly don't know why or where this rumor started, as our records do not indicate that our company ever sponsored any type of promotion surrounding images on the wrapper.

We hope we have been able to clarify this matter for you and we thank you for contacting us"
It's an automatic free tootsie pop from the store that sold it.

About as much 'value' as points earned on Y/A!
That is a hoax that my sons, when they were really little, were also convinced of by their own cousin. They are now 17 and 19 and have unfortunately discovered as they became older and wiser that the stars don't actually mean prizes.
When I was small if you got a star you could take the tootsie pop back to the store and get another one for free. But not anymore.....
free tootsie pop! horray! i still get free ones!
