What exactly are grits....?!

Question: What do they taste like and why would you eat them?

From a curious Aussie who finally wants to be able to imagine what they are talking about in such books as Bridge to Terabithia :)

Grits are U.S. polenta. You could call it maize porridge. Grits are usually made from white corn/maize, which is corn that has had the hull (outer skin) removed. The corn/maize is ground coarsely, again like polenta. Grits are cooked by simmering in salted water. Grits are a traditional food of the U.S. southeast, basically the southeast section of the U.S. in a diagonal from Texas to North Carolina.

Grits are usually eaten in the following ways: Plain, or with salt and pepper, or with a pat of butter, and/or with honey or sugar, or topped with sausage gravy (sausage gravy is made of a bechamel sauce with bits of sage sausage and some minced onion). Less frequently people will sprinkle hot sauce (like Tabasco, which is made in Louisiana) on them. They're most frequently eaten for breakfast, but not exclusively.

Their flavor is mild and of corn. They are comfort food. U.S. southerners are fond of their food traditions (grits, sweetened iced tea, fried chicken) and cling to them. Grits are a classic staple food of the southern U.S.
