Why does food microwaved in a Rubbermaid TakeAlong container end up tasting like plastic?!

Question: The packaging says they are microwavable, yet the food tastes horrible afterward.

Answers: The packaging says they are microwavable, yet the food tastes horrible afterward.

All "microwavable" plastics deteriorate over prolonged use. Generally they lose their shape and become more opaque, scaly and eventually brittle. This is an indication that such plastics react during microwaving releasing substances that may very well affect the taste of the food microwaved, not to mention health implications. What probably happens in the case of the container you mentioned is that the degree of degradation is more severe than on average. This is due to the manufacturing process used in the production of these containers. Sad to mention that health effects are far worse than the taste. It would be better to avoid using such products if at all possible.

Plastic leaches in any microwaved container.

mine usually takes on the flavor of whatever the previous person cooked in the microwave, just before me, was.

UGH!

The containers do warp and melt a little if you use them very often.

I find the best thing to do with leftovers is to store them in the container, but to reheat in a pan on the stove.

the plastic leaches into the food. Never use plastic in the microwave. put it in a china or porcelain container - nothing to leach out there!
