ARE THESE EGGS SPOILED? my friend bought a dozen eggs last evening at 5:30 pm...?!


Question: of course they were in the refridgerator section at the store, she left them in her car until 10pm. it was around 70 degreesF.
she says we can still eat them. i'm afraid to.
are these eggs ok to eat?

I think they spoiled, 70 degrees is over 30 degrees too high for them to be in unless they are pasteurized.

    They are completely fine. Lots of people don't even put eggs in the fridge.

    You know what.... eggs are close to a dollar a dozen. Make another trip to the grocery store and call it a day. I wouldnt eat them only because you never know, bacteria could have grown or something else causing damage to your health.

    Egg shells may seem pretty solid, but they are in fact slightly porous. Old eggs float in fresh cold water because of a large air cell that forms as the egg cools after being laid. As the egg ages, air enters the egg and the air cell becomes larger and this acts as a buoyancy aid.

    Generally, fresh eggs will lie on the bottom of the bowl of water. Eggs that tilt so that the large end is up are older, and eggs that float are rotten. The tilting is caused by air pockets in the eggs that increase in size over time as fluid evaporates through the porous shell and oxygen and gases filter in. The older an egg gets the more gas builds up inside it. More gas = more floating!

    Carefully lower your eggs into fresh cold water (do not use salted water) using a spoon:

    *

    If the egg stay at the bottom - it is fresh.
    *

    If the egg is at an angle on the bottom - it is still fresh and good to eat.
    *

    If the egg stands on its pointed end at the bottom - it is still safe to eat but best used for baking and making hard-cooked eggs.
    *

    If the egg float - they're stale and best discarded.

    The final test: To make sure the egg is not spoiled, break it into a clean bowl and check to make sure it doesn't have a bad odor or appearance.

    They are fine, eggs aren't really refrigerated until they are packed for the store. That means they are gathered, washed sized etc before they are refrigerated.

    There a few thing where room temperature eggs work much better, like meringue

    If they float in water they are bad. If they stay on bottom they are fine.

    They will be good til the expiration date on the box.They will last longer in the fridge....

    They are fine to eat. Most foods don't start to spoil until the very next day. Milk is the same way. If you left it out for a few hours that's ok. It's the next day deadline you must reach.

    They are probably fine. Until recently, eggs weren't refrigerated at all. Many countries still don't refrigerate eggs (saw them in grocery stores completely unrefrigerated in France). As long as they aren't cracked, the shells keep them from spoiling.

    The concern is that if one of the eggs happens to contain salmonella, storing at room temperature allows it to incubate and grow. If this worries you, make sure the eggs are fully cooked (no runny yolks)

    Break one open and smell it. If it doesn't smell bad then it's fine.
