Is it wise to pick fruit from hedgerows on a roadside?!

Question: I hear they can be toxic.

Answers: I hear they can be toxic.

Depends how busy the road is, there's lots of air bourne particulates that might be on the fruit although it's unlikely that there's any longer a problem with lead contamination as fuels are so much cleaner now. Might be advisable to pick over waist height though, to avoid animal soiling.
Best of luck with your foraging food for free!

Hi, I only pick fromthe hedges when they are growing away fromwhere the fumes and dust from passing cars ect cannot get at them.

people have been doing it for years,as long as you wash it when you get home, shouldn't be a problem, they are no more toxic than the stuff we buy over the counter, with all the preservatives they put in

i wouldnt....open fields are your best bet if you want to pick fruit....we've got a couple of pick your own places as well near us....better be safe than sorry i'd say.

I have been doing it for years and Im not dead yet!!!! You can always take them home and wash them. surely we can say this about anything...what about people living near the motorways and airports does that mean they shouldn't eat what grows in their gardens???????

i think that picking fruit from the roadside is safe enough as long as you wash it well before eating or cooking. most of the fruit in shops is probably more toxic than fruit staight from the trees or bushes, god knows what they have been sprayed with before its on our shelves!

No.
Exhaust fumes will be all over the fruit.
Dont know any science here to tell you, but you can see the muck all over em when your near them.
So no I dont think its wise.

I don't see a problem if you wash them thoroughly before using. I wouldn't go below waist level in case there have been any dogs around!!

I wouldn't do it. There is so much pollution from traffic they would probably do you more harm than good. Also I live in a very rural area and farmers spray the fields including the hedgerows with some really noxious chemicals. I'd steer well clear.

Do not go below knee height, fot various reasons

WHAT WOULD A HUNGRY HOMELESS PERSON DO?
JUST WASH THEM

yuk i wouldnt if was you
