A friend of mine visited London recently and he said he ate pigeon. I think someone played a joke on him.?!
Answers: Can someone explain this to me? Is it a joke to tell tourists this, or do they really eat pigeons?
People do in fact eat pigeon. It is considered a delicacy in most places and is eaten by kings, queens, and presidents. Normally you eat the baby pigeons, or squabs. They are not the Rock Doves you see in the streets but utility pigeons bred for eating such as Carneaux and Kings. It could have been Wood Pigeon, as others have said, but you'll never really know which it was until you ask.
People eat pigeons
It is known as squab and is good. They are raised for food, not picked up from the street.

Wood pigeon is considered a bit of a delicacy. Its ethically similar to eating chicken but is a richer flavour similar to pheasant.

Yes people do eat pidgeon as long as it's not from Trafalgar Square.
It was probably Wood Pigeon, shot as game in the country. Possibly domesticated "rock dove" raised for the pot.
It was almost certainly not "winged rat" from London streets. However there was a rumour some years ago of a guy seen stuffing pigeons into a big cardboard box in Trafalgar Square. Is this an urban myth, I can't say? Here is a recipe for Wood Pigeon
