Why do generic or store brand food products never say where they are made or who manufacturers it?!

Question: It always just says Distributed by "so and so" Company or whatever.

Are they actually made by the big brand name companies, but then just labeled differently and sold under store brands and generic brand names?

My first real job was as an accountant at a food packaging and processing company. We made generic, and other companies products with their labels.

Generic means just that. You never know which name brand made it, plus they do not use the same recipe that they use on their advertised products. The contract stipulates the use of name, distributor, and the like.

Because they can be made by any of a number of manufactures or packagers and there is usually an agreement not to use the brand names...that is why those products are called GENERIC..

Many store brands items are in fact manufactured by big brand companies.I believe items that are produced in the U.S. are nat labeled ,but items that are made abroad do have made in ... or product of....

Many years ago I worked for a large multi-national company who owned various leading brand names in wine, toiletries and cosmetics, cleaning products, etc. The company used part of their excess manufacturing capacity to produce generic brands using slightly lower ratios of the effective and more expensive ingredients.

I have only just recently seen a product using the words, "This product brand does not manufacture store products."
