Why SMOKING cigaretts? Why not EATING them?!

well 'chewing' tobacco is very similar to eating cigarettes.
the drugs goes into your lungs faster than it would through digestive system. it's a more efficient way of getting the high from tobacco

Tobacco contains the drug nicotine (amongst other things) and this needs to get into the blood stream and travel to the brain to have its effect. As others have already said, this happens more quickly through the lungs than via the digestive tract.
Chewing tobacco is chewed, the nicotine dissolves in the saliva and is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, again getting into the blood stream quite quickly. The remainder of the tobacco "plug" (as I believe it's called) is later spat out, I think.
In answer to the person who suggets putting it up your nose, powdered tobacco is called "snuff" and you inhale it by the pinch. In this case, the nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the nose, into the bloodstream.
I don't know whether it's true or an urban myth, but I have heard that the nicotine in a cigarette, if the whole cigarette was eaten, would poison and kill you. I would expect that the damn things would taste even worse than they smell, so can't imagine why anybody would ever try that!
(Craig Charles' character Lister in Red Dwarf eats a cigarette in "Holoship", but I'm sure that was just a prop...)
