What is the difference between cow and steer?!

Question: A cow is a female bovine (though other types of animals like elephant females are called cows too.) A steer was born a bull but has been castrated. On our beef cattle ranch the bull calves are almost always castrated unless it is an exceptional animal and we need another bull as a herd sire.
