Question: I keep seeing this on bottles for years and I am so eager to find out what it really does mean!

In Hawaii and Maine, you get a 5 cents per bottle that you return to the recycle place :)

That's the redemption value for the glass or plastic. In your case, Hawaii and (double check me, but I think ME is Maine??) there's a 5 cent redemption value for the bottle. It's for recycling and the like.

the recycle refund in those states..

states ... you get money back when you return the emties.

LoL I used to think it was the bottle greeting me in improper english and saying in other words "Hello I have a value of five cents..." but recently I found out in one of my college classes that it means in the states ME and HI you can take the bottles to a recycling place to receive 5 cents.
