5 portions of fruit and veg a day but what constitutes one portion?!

Question: I am making an effort to eat as much fruit and veg as possible so am keen to know how often I meet or exceed my reccommended 5-a-day.

I notice on the prepack of fresh pineapple I have just bought this is 1 portion (it is a 200g pack)

The 200g pack of raw carrot I am munching through does not say - is this also one portion?

Does anyone know where I can get a guide of the amounts of various fruits and vegetables that would constitute one portion?

Check this link and click on the headings "everyday fruits" and "everyday veg". Pretty much everything seems to be on there.

1 portion is roughly a handful or 1 cup of fruit or veg, so...

1 apple/banana/pear/etc

1 handful grapes/sprouts/etc

You get the drift

EXCELLANT QUESTION!!!!!
What is a Portion?
A portion is roughly 3 ounces, which is equal to:
? One medium-size fruit
? 1/2 cup raw, cooked, frozen or canned fruits (in 100% juice) or vegetables
? 3/4 cup (6 oz.) 100% fruit or vegetable juice
? 1/2 cup cooked, canned or frozen legumes (beans and peas)
? 1 cup raw, leafy vegetables
? 1/4 cup dried fruit
Here is a site that will help.

Slainté(to your health)

1 portion is about the same size as a clenched fist.

I don't think manufacturers are always honest/accurate. Sometimes a pack of mixed fruit claims to be worth 3 portions when there are three fruits even though there are only small amounts of each one. Yes, I would say a 200g pack of pineapple is one portion. I would say that a medium sized carrot would be a portion, but I don't know how that compares to 200g. Two tangerines make a portion, as does 1 kiwi. One banana or two small ones make a portion, and one apple, but if funsize, you would need two. You need 8 cherry tomatoes and for vegetables, a large spoonful. A small glass of fruit juice counts, as long as it is not too processed.

Hi there is a website that called 5 aday that tells you everything you need to know I think someone else has already put a link on her to the website.

I tried to print it off once before but it didnt work lol

Very good question.
I wish a could give you a sensible answer.
Different freak Will tell you different things

Good question! It had me puzzled for ages too.
I think it was made easier to understand when they began to say a portion equalled a cupfull. But how large is your cup? And how large would that cup be in relation to your body size?
To make matters worse, some leading food gurus are now saying it ought to be seven portions, not five!
If you don't eat a lot, or skip meals and can only manage a dinner, it is very hard to eat so much fruit and vegetables, or anything else for that matter!
The best thing you can do is just eat sensibly. Making sure it is a balanced, varied diet which includes fresh fruit and vegetables.
Most of us would agree that a home-made stew that had five different veggies in it, or a mixed vegetable soup, followed by some fruit would suffice. However, that would be considered only 2 or 3 portions of daily requirements, depending on how much stew you could eat.
Worrying about it and forcing yourself to overeat won't be healthy either, so just eat as much as you want.

Just use your judgement and common sense.

1 medium apple is a portion, but if you get small fruit like plums and satsumas then 2 make a portion. Suppose 1 medium or 2 small carrots make a portion. Things like sultanas, they say a handful makes portion, 'cos they're dried and more concentrated.

With cooked veg. they say a couple of tablespoons constitutes 1 portion.

I wouldn't get in a flap over it! As I said use your common sense.

One answer I heard from a nutritionist on TV was the size of a baseball. That's actually pretty easy to remember and to visualize.
