What's the big deal with beef steak?!

Question: I used to eat steak all the time when I was a kid (TBone, Filet Mignon) and I didn't understand what the big deal was; so much so that I rarely like to eat as an adult these days, if at all.

It's difficult for your system to digest, and difficult to chew, etc. It makes me tired after I eat it.

The steer is the ne plus ultra of livestock used for human food. Historically, it has been rare and expensive, requiring lots of pasture, time, and rather specific conditions to grow well. It is still rather expensive throughout the world. As people became more affluent, they wanted to eat more red meat, especially more expensive cuts and types (like t-bones, as opposed to chicken), perhaps for no other reason than they thought it was what they should want. This, I believe, is much of the reason that people dislike vegetables, without even knowing why: They were raised in a culture that rejected vegetables as inferior, "poor-people" food, and they grew up just assuming that vegetables were undesirable.

Like you, I ate far more beef as a child than I do now; I just don't think it's all that interesting, or even very appealing. My parents, on the other hand, were quite delighted at the prospect of being able to afford steaks. They chose their foods based on class considerations. I have my own reasons for my food choices, and they mostly have to do with convenience of cooking and mild flavor. I'd rather eat ham or turkey or sausage or chicken, or a great many other things. I probably don't eat more than 3 or 4 steaks a year.

Honestly, it's mostly because done right it tastes really good (and shouldn't be hard to chew). Couldn't see eating it every day, it'd kill me eventually, but once a month or every couple of months it's worth it to drop the money on a good one.

If it's difficult to chew that is some cheap, nasty steak. Who would want to eat it?

If it was difficult to chew then the steak was definately not done right or was a poor cut.
I really like steak, I eat 2-3 steaks a month. Usually not a big one, a small t-bone or rump. I'm think fillet is overrated if you just pan-fry it.
I eat a wide variety of meats; chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, occassionally pork and lots of fish [tuna, butterfish, hake, skatewing, sole]. Also love seafood such as prawns, mussels, oysters, etc. when I can afford them! ;)
