While loaded with salt (from the pickling process, the brine) they provide carbohydrates, protein and dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and calcium.

They are not fattening, but they have a lot of sodium in them. I eat them all the time too.

Human population studies show that eating garlic regularly reduces the risk of esophageal, stomach, and colon cancer. This is partly due to garlic's ability to reduce the formation of carcinogenic compounds. Animal and test tube studies also show that garlic, and its sulfur compounds, inhibit the growth of different types of cancer-especially breast and skin tumors.

Back in the Nineteenth century, doctors thought pickles could cure the disease known as scurvy. They were wrong. Pickles are not exactly health food and they contain far more salt than we need in our daily diet. I'd suggest limiting oneself to a single whole pickle a day or enough slices to completely cover, with one layer, one slice of bread in your sandwich.
