Having a problem with my chest freezer?!

Question: The freezer unwittingly thawed out with lots of meat in it. The meat blood ran all over the freezer. We've tried cleaning it out twice now. Is it a lost cause or is there something we can do?

Scrub it with hot water and bleach.

Its time for a new one hun! Mine did this and it was only a couple years old. The place I called to have it fixed estimated that it would cost more to fix it than it would for a new one! We went with a new one!

Not to mention the cost of all of the food that you have lost in the process. Twice in your situation! Call a repairman first, but I would recommend a new one!

While it is still frozen use an ICE SCRAPER- like you would use on your windows of your vehicle, just the plastic one... and scrape the bloody ice out of the bottom and the scoop or shovel it out. Unplug it now. Once you have done this go and buy some SOFT SCRUB with BLEACH and a soft sponge like you would do your dishes with, and clean that sucker like you have never cleaned anything before! The smell should be gone and your freezer should be as clean as the day you bought it! If a slight smell remains place a box of baking soda in there and it should take out any remaining scents.

Good luck!

I had the same thing happen to me during the huge midwest blackout a couple of years ago. Try unplugging your freezer, get everything out of it, then dump hot water and bleach (one cup bleach per one gallon of hot water) into the freezer and let it sit for an hour. Then use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to get the water out. If that doesn't get all the stains out, Soft Scrub with bleach and one of those green scratch pads works wonders.

get a newone ya

Is your problem the thawing unwittingly or the cleaning of blood. First thaw it wittingly then buy a meat with white blood. Be clear next time. And don't just throw questions unwittingly.

Don't go buy a new one, the stains and smell can be removed...it will take time and some work, try some of these....I used baking soda, bleach and water and let sit for a day or so, I did that several times.......

Removing Rotten Meat Smell from the Freezer

Description: Reader tips for removing rotten meat smell from the freezer.

Tip #1: I clean fridge or freezer that has rotten smells with either bleach or baking soda or vinegar, but also I remove the drip pan at the bottom of fridge/freezer either in the back or front at bottom as if the blood from the meat dripped down into it the smell will stay and only get worse. I cleaned out a fridge that had raw meat that got rotten in it and still it smelled bad till I pulled the drip pan out and cleaned it out really good. I keep an open box of baking soda in both the fridge and freezer at all times.

Tip #2: Try placing a container of vinegar in the freezer. Leave the container open.

Tip #3: Put a large bowl or pan of kitty litter in the freezer and close it for a week. Be sure to use the kind that contains chlorophyll...the green stuff...not the clay type! This worked wonders for us!

Tip #4: Try a freshly opened can of coffee. This is what they use in the trucks that they haul animal hides in.

You know, I've had the same problem... well, actually, for me it was my shoulder freezer.

We really need higher standards for such appliances in this country.
