Is it true that hormones are given to live stock that we use for food? And are we effected in anyway by them?!
I am asking from a meat eaters point of view, and would appreciate a meat eaters opinion and knowledge of the questions I have asked.
{{although if a veg has info that will answer my Q please, by all means, share it w/ me!!}}
I got into a conversation with a friend about how young some girls are when they start their periods (some as young as 7 or 8). Well, she was told by someone that the hormones that are fed to the livestock that we use as food can cause this, among other side effects that are not natural to us.
I know that you can "order" meat that is hormone free, organic and has the farm it was from listed on the packaging. Is this type of meat better for you?
Thank you all so much!

Hi Tonia *wave*!
I used to work in schools and I noticed that kids were getting boobs and periods MUCH earlier than when I was a girl.
It is true that animals raised for meat do get hormones added to their meat so they grow bigger faster. There's too much controversy as to whether they really hurt people, but there are enough believers that an entire industry sprang up around the idea that all that crap tht goes into meat goes into our bodies, too.
It's not just hormones given to animals. Because of the conditions in which they live they are also given antibiotics. There is a lot of research that indicates all those antibiotics are making them AND us desensitized to antibiotics/it's making viruses immune to them too. That's not really something we should be encouraging!
There also is an issue with the feed they give to animals used for food. Often this food will contain other animals. When you've got an animal that's not supposed to eat other animals nature lets you know to knock it off. This is happening with "mad cow disease". Did you know that any kind of animal (humans included) that eat others of their kind will get this "mad cow disease" - bascially they go crazy and the disease infects the flesh of that animal. I don't want that on my plate, thanks!
Keep in mind that the issues with hormones, antibiotics, and nasty feed is not just limited to meat. It is an issue with dairy and eggs as well.
Organic food, while not necessarily all that much kinder to the animals (not in every case, anyway), it DOES regulate how animals are fed and prohobits the use of hormones/steroids, and antibiotics and other additives. If I ate animal products I would ABSOLUTELY make sure that they were organic.
You really must read The China Study! It goes into detail about a lot of this. One thing no one wants to talk about is that these girls who are developing earlier and women who are still able to have babies well into their late 40's are being exposed to female hormones far longer than they used to and this is GREATLY increasing their chances of breast cancer.
Read it! Trust me.
Yes it's true, and it could be what causes some men to develop man boobs and it also causes premature adolescence.
I'm not so sure it causes some people to grow very tall and it could cause gigantism as well as other problems
Estrogen (a hormone) used to be used to fatten up livestock before they slaughtered it and sold it. That was awhile back though because once people started eating the livestock that had the estrogen injections guys started getting boobs and other femenine characteristics. From what I know hormones are against the law and are not allowed to be used on animals that are going to be eaten.
sounds like you have a fairly good idea of what is going on already
Oh man!.. havent you noticed that fat boys have Man boobs nowadays.. When in the past, when a kid got fat, he was just fat, now they get boobs and Ive even seen some overweight men that seem to have hips now.. its really alarming.. All the estrogen they pump into the meat.. America is slowly breeding out its men.. ewwww!
Yes unfortunatley but not all animals go through that process fortunatley because there are natural safe farms. It can give you some brain damage i believe and your body will develop more in some places. I think it would be better to buy organic meats but sometimes you can't trust those either.
