Is lunch meat, such as 98% lean turkey and ham in water a good lunch for someone limiting their sodium intake?!
Answers: I don't eat sandwiches, I really just snack on these. My mother told me that there is a lot of hidden sodium in lunch meats, however lean they are or whatever they happen to be packed in. Is she right? Are they okay, or am I better off licking McDonald's fries?
There is a lot of hidden sodium in prepared lunch meat. Unfortunately, there's a lot of hidden sodium even in whole chickens as producers often "plump up" the meat by injecting it with sodium solutions to make the meat weigh more and also to make it juicy.
If you like snacking on meat, try baking some chicken breasts and then slicing up the meat and storing it in baggies for a quick, high protein and low sodium snack.
Well Mcdonald's fries are not the better choice, but your mother is right. Many lunch meats contain high amounts of sodium as do many other processed foods. It helps to preserve the meat. It is not hidden though. Sodium content is listed on the label. Lean has nothing to do with sodium and everything to do with fat. There are a few companies now that have low sodium lunch meats if you enjoy it. Check the labels.
Your Mom is right and Lean means less fat not less sodium =)
There is a lot of sodium in lunch meats because thats how they are preserved/prepared. You can get the low salt ones in the deli but they still have sodium.
I eat them the same way as you do, but I try to limit myself to a slice or two because of the salt content.
LOL @ licking the fries.. That's cute =)
she's right. look at the package. As a cook, I know most ready to eat meats are salt cured. you need fresh fruits and veggies, but no dressing, or at least viniagrette. research all foods you eat and crave. It's human nature to crave your poison, so to speak. cheese is high in sodium too. stay away from fast food salads, because all sodium is in the chicken and dressings. you're better off going to the grocery and making your own foods. but I stress RESEARCH EVERY FOOD. good luck!
that is one of the highest sources of sodium next to soups that you will find. the best way to diet is to cook your own food and not buy it out of a can.
The sodium content should be listed right on the label
