It's almost certainly not a maggot in the usual garbage-eating (and worse) sense. It's probably the larval (maggot) stage of one of several meal moths that can get into stored food.
I am certain that you could sue and would "win" a ruling that the company was at fault, even if the expiration date has passed. But win how much? Or, in legal terms, what are your actual damages? I'm not making light of the disgusting experience, but you have no medical bills, no lost wages, etc. You might get something for the emotion distress but that's not certain.
If you find a zealous lawyer, he or she might take your case on contingency (you don't pay unless you win) and get the company to settle for a few hundred dollars, 1/3 to 1/2 of which the lawyer would keep. But if the company refused to settle, you'd have to drop the case and might end up paying the filing fee (maybe $50) even though you don't have to pay your lawyer.
I'd say, take the coupon, or negotiate with the company for a little more, maybe a coupon for a whole box of cereal bars (if you still eat them!).
Judas Priest, throw it away. Or take it to the store and ask for a manager and tell him/her you want your money back. More than likely they'll be happy to refund or exchange.
If not you called the company and they offered you a coupon, take the coupon. Better yet, find their web site and write an email, tell them you expect better from them and how very happy you've been with them in the past and you don't want to lose your faith in them. Bet they send you a few boxes.
But griminies, it is not the end of the world. Food spoils, goes bad and gets bugs, everything can't be perfect and we can't stop the world for every little thing we take offense to.
that is gross I'm sorry that has happen but u did the right thing and called them. There is nothing you can really do but I would tell them to check all the food items of that product so someone else doesnt get one and are as nice as you are,
I've had a similar experience at a dollar store. The expiration date is in the future, but the bar is old. Easiest thing to do is throw it away and buy bars at a different store. You could waste a lot of time and energy trying to get them to make it right.
You get what you paid for. In this case some extra protein (maggots are very high in protein & fat).
Gross!!! how nasty, I would throw it away and Never buy for them again. Also I would make a complaint again to the company.
