Why can't you find Pumpkins to buy after Halloween in the UK?!
Answers: Why can't you find Pumpkins to buy after Halloween in the UK? Presumably, they are harvested throughout September, October and November, so why are they non-existent in stores or markets after Halloween. Doesn't make sense to me. Do they throw in the rubbish after Halloween. Answers?
It is a very sad issue you have raised here... I am very much afraid to say that the majority of the great British public do not actually EAT pumpkins! That is why they are sold off by 31st October. Not one of the supermarkets would re-stock after mid October, because they know what is not sold for making Halloween lanterns, will not shift off the shelves. It would be different if they were the size of apples, but they take an awful lot of space up for very little profit (I bought 99p pumpkins this year!)
They are used as decorations and then thrown out! I know only two other people who make anything edible - one a postwar baby who will not waste a crumb and the other is my Kiwi Cousin who was raised on pumpkins, squash and kummera (spelling?). He always complains we do not have "proper pumpkin" in the UK... Not bright orange flesh.
I do not know anyone (except me) who roasts the seeds to eat! I personally make lots of Pumpkin and Tomato Chutney and we also eat roast pumpkin, pumpkin soup and pumpkin (or squash) & potato cakes for a couple of weeks, until we have our fill... It is not a favourite food without some other addition and I am afraid even a joyous eater like myself, is not really enamoured of that national dish from across the pond: pumpkin pie (too sweet for me).
Now *marrow* is a different kettle of fish... That is not an import and so it is more in touch with the national psyche! LOL! You must use an Ersatz like squash, if you are wasting away for want of a plump pumpkin! Happy Thanks Giving, Ya'wl!
I expect you will find them in specialist vegetable stores/farms/markets from september - november, dont think they're in season the rest of the year. But generally you wont find them much at any other time other than october because popularity of them drops to zero once November 1st arrived
try looking for the long neck punpkins. they make really good pies.
Don't know. I am in the U.S. and surprised that you guys have Halloween (pumpkin wise of course not religious wise). However, I don't think that the decorative kind found in the shops are that good to eat. Too many seeds.
I would say yes as most of the sale comes from the stupid Halloween craps that was imported from the USA, I would think that you will find some in the main super markets already cut into slices as a whole pumpkin is a lot to eat for most people , it is a terrible waste of food if you ask me, I live in Switzerland where it is normal to see pumpkin in the shops but there are hell of a lot more at Halloween, but with any luck it should stop as it does not make enough profit as Halloween is not in the Swiss culture.
Our Pumpkin season has finished. They would either have to be especially grown under glass or imported. This would probably make it uneconomical to produce them.
Hi.if you live near any farm shops try them, they often store pumpkins for a few months in straw,so you may get lucky there.i hope this helps.
in ireland they were harvested for halloween and sold, even the green ones. it was a poor year for pumpkin growers this year.
