I'm confused about processed meats. how do i eat healthy lunch meat? where do i find non-cancer causing meats?!
Answers: All processed meats (cold cuts, bacon, hot dogs, etc.) are made with an ingredient called sodium nitrite. This preservative prevents botulism. Unfortunately you digestive system turns sod. nitrite into a carcinogen. However Vit. C blocks the conversion., so have some type of Vit. C with that meal. Also avoid processed meats that are put together like salami, bologna, liverwurst. Instead have those that are solid pieces of meat like, Ham, Turkey Breast, Bacon. Just remember to have that Vit. C. with it.
I just don't think there are 'healthy' processed meats - some say they are lowfat, etc. but....
I think it's much better to roast a chicken or chicken breast, and use that meat in sandwiches - or roast beef or pork. Even baking a ham is better.
Good luck with that one! I usually purchase turkey breast and slice it at home. Same way with beef/chicken. Even though I dont know if the turkey breast has been processed. I feel a little bit better by buying the breast unsliced and slicing them in my own home.
Get it from the source and not a pre-package.
A good idea into what is processed, ham is a great example of that lol . I have never seen ham come in shapes that the deli counter has them in. That is a red flag right there.
I would do my best to buy fresh and slice it for your own use at home.
There are healthy luncheon meats, at health food stores. And I saw some at Whole Foods, probably Nugget has them also, free from nitrates. I personally vowed not to eat processed meats and after a couple of weeks I felt a tremendous difference in how I felt. I eat tuna, home-made chicken salad, pasta dishes instead for lunch. But if you look, there seem to be more healthful foods in the market today. At least healthier than a decade ago.
Any thing you make will be good if your intention is to make it healthy
