Is frozen veg as nutritious as fresh veg...?!
Answers: ... assuming they are prepared in the same way?
It depends how long it took to freeze the veg and what they are. Some will freeze better than others.
The freezing process slows the rate of deterioration and locks in a lot of the nutrients. You will notice that Birds Eye Peas advertise how quicky they are frozen after being picked. They will not be as good as fresh from your garden, but may be far better than something from a supermarket. Consider how long ago they would have been picked. These will have been shipped from abroad, sat on a supermarket shelf and then in your fridge for a few days.
The other issue regarding nurients is how long you cook it for and the method you use. Steaming keeps far more than boiling as the nutrients leach out in to the water, which you then drain away.
yeah, they arent as nutritious, but they are just as good :D my doctor told me this
i am no nutritionist but i would expect fresh to be better for you. but frozen has got to be better than nothing.
alto
no but if you buy the new steam fresh veg they are the next best thing
Supposedly yes - but I usually go for fresh with whatevers in season - use frozen for out of season stuff.
yes
Yes, but I prefer fresh as they taste better
The vitamins in vegetables start to degrade as soon as they are picked, so the answer as mentioned in a previous answer, as to how soon they were frozen is correct.
If the 'fresh' vegetables that you buy have been hanging around in a warehouse or in transport for a couple of days or more, then the 'fresh' frozen vegetables will probably be more nutritious.
It's all a matter of timing.
Ditch the freezer..........FRESH IS BEST. No question.
most frozen vegies are snap frozen while they are still really fresh and usually dont have anything added to them whereas "fresh" sitt in the warehouse and then in the store for ages, so i have been told that yes frozen are just as nutritious and are heaps cheaer also
yes i would have thought so
because everything is frozen in
when the veg was fresh
and released again when you cook it
its got to be better than canned veg anyday
yes as long as you don't over cook then when you get them out of the freeze they part cook them before freezing to kill the enzymes on them which start the decaying process of them so something like frozen green beans will only need to be dropped into boiling for 5min's and kept at a boil for the full time
i've heard it's better than fresh, if the fresh has travelled far or is old.
