The "heat" of chili peppers is measured in Scoville units (SHU). Bell peppers rank at 0 (SHU), New Mexico green chilis at about 1,500 SHU, jalape?os at 3,000–6,000 SHU, and habaneros at 300,000 SHU. The record for the hottest chili pepper was assigned by the Guinness Book of Records to the Naga Jolokia, measuring over 1,000,000 SHU. Pure capsaicin, which is a hydrophobic, colorless, odorless, crystalline to waxy solid at room temperature, measures 16,000,000 SHU.

According to the Scoville Heat Scale, the hottest chilli is the Naga Jolokia, at 855,000 units. The pure chemical responsible for chillis' "heat", capsaicin, comes in at 16 million units.
The smaller the pepper the hot-er it will be, for example a jabanero would be much hot-er than a jalapeno and a bell pepper would be much milder than a jalapeno.

I thought it to be a scotch bonnet or the ghost.
Be very careful, these things are not a bit of fun - they are extremely hot, a few years ago while I was overseas I was given a red chili the size of a pea to try - in seconds, it made me feel faint and my eyes were flashing lights, it was horrible. I didn't have that particular one again - my fave is the long thin green chili - I can just eat them out of the bag but that's as far as I will go.
