Does diet soda make you stupid?!

Question: I was over at my uncles and he was very strict about my cousin having soda because of its sugar, my dad mentioned diet, and he said it effects your mind. Although I'm not sure if he said diet or caffeine, he said they add an ingredient to make it still taste good. He watches the news ALOT. But yet, I not sure, can you tell me?

It contains aspartame, which penetrates into the brain and interferes with its workings, so in that sense it could be said to make you stupid, but it's more likely to cause epilepsy and brain tumours.

The researchers who discovered that aspartame was a sweetener were surely acting in good faith. They had no reason to suppose that it was harmful because it is basically a small protein molecule which you could expect to be digested harmlessly and absorbed. However, by the time it was established it was harmful, millions had been invested and lots of people's jobs depended on its production, so to be fair, they were only trying to protect their businesses and the livelihood of thousands or millions of people, and they are fully justified in doing this. Nevertheless, aspartame is an extremely nasty substance.

I have personal experience of this. I once put aspartame into a coffee, having mistaken it for sugar, whereas it was in fact a reduced calorie mix of sugar and aspartame, and a few minutes later i nearly lost consciousness and felt very dizzy and unable to think straight for a quarter of an hour or so, not a state i have ever been in before despite a history of unhealthy eating. Therefore, i am convinced it is very harmful, and yes, it causes brain damage. At the very least there are people without PKU who are dangerously intolerant of it.

it sure does make me stupid ......or is it the vault ...hmmmmm

No, it does not make you stupid at all.

Maybe thats y we live in such a stupid society.

first off, diet doesnt mean caffiene free - it can still be diet but have caffiene. yes, sugar and caffiene can make you stupid.

Yes, it makes you very very stupid, and you spend your life at Yahoo answering questions

I'm a diabetic and have to drink diet pop and my IQ is still 128 after all these years.

No it doesn't make you stupid, sugar makes you hyper but only if you consume a lot of it.

Well, uh, I heard that a lot of times. x3 I don't exactly know why but theres a chemical that effects your brain. It doesn't make you really 'Stupid' but it makes you like.. dippy and forgetful. X3 That kind of thing.
But, of course, thats only over long-term use.

Yep, I'm living proof, I drink diet soda and have for 10 years, I'm dumb as a box of rocks. LOL

I'm sure the chemicals and artificial ingredients can have a effect on the body after long term use and is not "good" for you, but I don't know if it creates drain bamage, errrr...uuhhhh brain damage.

Not all diet soda has Aspartame or Phenylalanine.

Uh, no, caffiene just stunts your growth. Caffiene can also give you caffiene-high, which is ery mild and just gives you headaches.

Actually, it's aspartame it kills brain cells and can lead to some symptoms of cancer.

Okay your uncles are definitely not experts.
Here's why Diet Soda Is Not As Healthy As You May Think:

1. You might notice that you get bloated if you decide to drink diet soda. The main reason is because the carbonation that can be found in diet soda leads to fluid retention. This could be the reason that you might begin to notice a little bit of a "pouch" if you are drinking a lot of diet soda lately. Although you might think that you will lose a whole lot of weight through drinking diet soda, the truth is that you could end up feeling as though you are losing less weight with regular soda because of the amount of water weight that you could end up gaining from diet soda.

2. One of the main reasons that you night be drinking this is because it is low in sugar. However, did you ever wonder if it was low in anything else? Just because diet soda is low in sugar does not mean that it isn't loaded in other things. In fact, diet soda has an extremely high sodium content. One of your main questions might be if sugar or sodium intake is worse. The answer is that you can really flip a coin or take your pick. Both are not healthy when they are drank excessively.

3. Diet soda contains Aspartame, which is highly unhealthy for your body- in more ways than one. If you did not already know, ten percent of Aspartame consists of methanol, also known as wood alcohol, which is an extremely deadly poison. Eventually, once you have consumed it, methanol will turn into formic acid and formaldehyde while it is in your body. Both of these things are, of course, poisonous to the body. What's worse is that Aspartame has been known to vision complications among humans, as well as seizures and brain tumors among animals. Overall, it is definitely safe to say that Aspartame is not something that you would want to consume if you were able to choose not to.

4. You might find yourself wanting to snack a whole lot more, which could defeat the purpose of incorporating diet soda into your diet if you are trying to lose weight. Nutrasweet, which is often found in different types of diet sodas, is known to cause excessive hunger or thirst. Another reason that you will probably find yourself feeling thirsty after you have drank diet soda is because it contains so much sodium, which is known to cause constant thirst.

PS:it doesn't at all make u stupid. In fact it can zip your brain electrical messages when you're in great stress.

Definitely not. Any soda doesn′t make you stupid at all. Drinking wine during meals does it, due to the high alcohol level (more than twice than beer). People who drink wine every day become stupid. Seriously! But not pop or soda.

Yes, there is a certain ingredient called Aspartame, and it can stimulate your brain, making you think everything is sweet. Whether or not it makes you stupid... Maybe not.

i dunno.. but study says computer games do
