My waterbottles always stink. Why is this, and it still ok to drink?!

Question: The part that I drink out of always smells like wet, rotten socks. I usually drink all of the water in them, and then refill my bottles from jugs of water that I buy at Wal-mart. Is this stench normal, harmful, or what? I also have this cold that I can't get rid of. Do my stinky water bottles have anything to do with that?

Generally, you do not want to reuse water bottles more than once, if even that. It harbors a lot of bacteria when you refill it and especially when you close the lid.

It may be the reason why you cannot get rid of your cold - the same bacteria is getting into your system.

If you want to be environmentally conscious, buy a plastic water bottle that can be cleaned with soap and water with a wide opening for the mouth part. Otherwise, use a new bottle every time.

Holly basically said everything i was going to say.

It may also be your breath believe it or not. Make sure you are brushing your tounge b/c whatever that "smell" is in your mouth is in your saliva and will transfer to the water bottle brim. But , most definiately if you re use your water bottles make sure you clean them very well, in hot water!!!

Your saliva is causing the smell. Even if your mouth does not touch the opening, and you just pour water into your mouth like pouring into a glass while you drink, your breath will still cause the smell. This is the same with a straw. Have you tried smelling a straw that you left your coke the counter a day later? Try using a new bottle or wash the bottle regularly. Good luck :)
