Finding caffeine on ingredient labels?!
Thanks for your help!
Answers: I am trying to stay away from caffeine, as I have been having trouble sleeping lately. I do not drink soda or coffee. I do, however, drink green tea (diet, turkey hill brand) and I want to know where I can find if there is caffeine in this. Is the word caffeine on ingredient labels flatout, or is it 'disguised,' if you will, as another word. I'm not looking just for this particular tea, but I would like to keep an eye out for it in other items too. So again, where can I find if there is caffeine in an item, and how much is in it, on an ingredient label?
Thanks for your help!
First of all, props to you for liking Turkey Hill. That's my choice of iced tea drink. Second, I found this on its web site:
1. Does Turkey Hill Iced Tea contain caffeine?
Most Turkey Hill teas do contain caffeine, about 30-55 mg per serving. But we also manufacture a selection of decaffeinated teas (with just 3-5 mg. per serving) for customers who prefer to avoid caffeine. These flavors include Green Tea with Ginseng & Honey, Decaffeinated Iced Tea, Diet Decaffeinated Iced Tea, and Diet Decaffeinated Orange Iced Tea. Also, Turkey Hill Lemonades and Orangeade are excellent caffeine-free selections.
I'm not sure if that's a lot of caffeine, I've heard tea has about half the caffeine in coffee.
green tea has more caffiene than coffee!
Some tea has caffeine, some does not. Because it is naturally found in tea, it is not listed in the ingredients. Look for boxes that say "decaffeinated".
Caffeine is not listed on the ingredient list. Sure wish it was. Some products are now volunteering the information under the ingredient list or next to it. Unless the product has it noted as No-caffeine, the best you can do is contact the company. Usually there's an 800 number where you can call, unfortunately you don't usually get an immediate answer.
Ingredient labels don't list caffeine, they list "ingredients". All tea has caffeine in it unless it's decaffeinated, so just go and buy decaf.
Don't listen to the people who say that "decaf" doesn't have caffeine. It's not true. I am allergic to caffeine--if I were to drink decaf, I'd have to go to the ER--and infact, I once had to! I had a decaf tea under the assumption there'd be no caffeine--boy was I wrong! There IS caffeine in decaf. To legally be considered "decaf," it has to have at least 97% less caffeine. So, there's still up to 3% caffeine in a decaf drink.
Go caffeine-free, not decaf.
Herbal teas do not have caffeine. They usually advertise on the front as "caffeine-free" but you won't usually find it in the ingredients, it is just a natural part of regular tea & coffee.
Gree tea is loaded with caffeine.
If an item, such as green ta of coffee, has caffeine in herently in it, caffeine will not be spelled out on an ingredient list.
If an item, like Coca-Cola or Red Bull, has caffeine ADDED to it, you WILL see caffeine on the food label.
You need to find a list of foods naturally containing caffeine and look for THEM on food labels, not just the word "caffeine."
