After this date...you die; why does bottled water have a 'best by' date on it?!

Question: The reason that bottled was has a 'best by' or 'use by date' on it is that under the Food Safety Act it is a legal requirement that ANY food (drink) product, must contain a date as to which it is still deemed as safe to consume.

Ludicrous as it sounds bottled water is millions of years old already, but to comply with the law it must present a date somewhere on the packaging.

As with canned goods such as soup, the method of preservation that is involved means that they could still be enjoyed in the same condition some 30 years after the 'use by' date, as long as the can shows no signs of rusting or dents.

Hope you find this useful.

does it actually say die, what are you on love?

if it stayed long enough in the container it is in it will taste like the container or maybe a little of it.

It has a best by because when the water is in contact with the plastic for that long, it can get a little contaminated.
It would probably still be okay to drink though.

Ive often wondered that myself... hmmmm. I was gonna say everything does, but sugar doesnt. Good question!!

perhaps the breaking down of the plastic itself into the water

Ha. I didn't even notice that.

Imagine that...drinking stale water! ROFL

water goes 'flat' after a certain period.

I'm assuming it would go a little stale in the bottle
it wont kill you to drink it

After the expiry date, the water acquires an 'odd' taste to it, which possibly because its been in contact with the plastic for so long

The food reacts with the atmosphere and the property of the food starts to change after that certain amount of time....
The more time spent after the best-by date, the more reaction and therefore more changes to the food

basically its not a nice food anymore after it reacts with the atmosphere

i asked my husband a similar question the other day. there are sell by dates on everything now. there never used to be. i think the manufacturers are just covering their own backs so they can't be sued if anyone becomes ill. you know what i mean.

it would probably have a stale taste to it but be safe enuf to drink.
all these sell by dates are only there to stop companies getting sued if you get sick eating their products.
i was brought up in the 50's and 60's and nothing was dated then. you just new when something was off. food should last in tins for eight to ten years. you know when an egg is off by putting it in a glass of water.
even fruit is dated. My god if someone is so thick they can't tell when they have a rotten piece of fruit they must be really thick. I in fact find that most fruit is best when it is way past its sell by date.
i have eaten food past its date and its been fine.
It's a nanny state that is scared of getting sued.....!

bottled water does not have to meet such high hygiene standards as tape water in the uk at least.bottled water does have small amounts of contaminants in it .primarily bacteria and algae,There is a point at which you may be able to see at least the algae.so the bottles are dated well before taints or colouring become a problem.makes you think be for you drink, your next bottle.

Because the plastic bottle begins chemical changes that mix with the water. Scary thought isn't it?
