Why do you think Starbucks does so well even though their coffee sucks?!

Question: I know smaller, unknown local chains of coffee places whose drinks are just better tasting overall. Was Starbucks just lucky?

Greetings!

Short answer: addiction and availability!

Americans are addicted to coffee
Starbucks is available in over 9,400 locations across the US

We're addicted and there's a dealer on every corner.

I wish you Peace.

i totally agree!! it think its those damnn frappucinos

also i think it has become a trend within the younger popular crowds

Because people are sheep. (Except for me--I'm just an a**)

I am addicted to the green tea frappacino, I dont really rink just their coffe but those green tea fraps are delicious

They are like McDonald's. They serve a highly addictive product, have a several stores in every major US City and have millions of dollars for advertising. The product suffers but in the end they make a killing.

Sucks? That's not even rational. Sure there are better places, but they are NOT Denny's or your local diner. You are either really young or not too experienced with coffee. The challenge always used to be to find a place that USUALLY had good coffee. Ever since Starbucks and Seattle's Best had their war in Seattle, which Starbucks won, the proliferation of those little shops you like began. And you can still go to Starbucks and get a really good coffee -- better than Cheddar's or McDonald's or anyone, except the one or two mom and pop shops that you know.

marketing.

just like most people use windows... even though macs and osx are way better... :)

I personally never been to starbucks and don't plan on going.... I can't see the logic in paying $5 for a cup of java.

They have perfected their presentation, service (quick, easy), and they have good locations. Small locally owned coffee shops are just as good if not better but slowed and not consistent.... Americans are workaholics and we want everything fast now and predictable. Thats just what I think?

Starbucks has one of the strongest coffees that I have ever tasted. But on the same token they have one of the best Frappacinos that I have tasted. I think for flavor of coffee, my brand would be Timmy's (for those in the U.S. it is known as Tim Hortons here in Canada). It doesn't matter where you go across Canada, the lines are usually out the door during the day. I think part of the reason why these chains do so well is the culture to sit back and chat...it is a great tradition...and they are great ice-breakers for any types of meetings, chats and dates. Anyways, hope that helps.

it used to be coffee was cheap, and every diner had it. nobody wanted to pay more than a dollar for it if it was the same cheap stuff. then came along starbucks who was the first to go national with a better product and style of selling it. and they charged accordingly. people started lining up for it.

....also starbucks has marketing and distribution power. while smaller independents might have a bettter product, that doesn't mean squat if nobody knows who you are, or where you are.

Starbucks can't compare with Dunkin Donuts, which I know are few and far between in the west. And Dunkin charges about $3 less per cup for their coffee. Drive-up windows if you are really in a hurry, courteous counter people, and the BEST tasting coffee ever!

I've been drinking Starbucks from way back when I had to order it on line. I do like their House Blend and the Breakfast Blend.I think they just hit when the timing was right. Their shoppes make a nice place to meet, and they seem to attract a nice clientele. There are some good local shoppes, but I haven't found one yet to make a better espresso. I treat myself to a nice coffee instead of dessert.

ur one of the rare ones that doesnt like starbucks. i love it. some of their drinks dont even taste like coffee. and many are coffee addicts so they keep buying and starbuck's business goes up

They are everywhere and too expensive for the quality of their product.

starbucks is just for preppy rich spoiled girls.
and there plenty of those girls.

there are kids dying of cancer, and thats all you worry about. I just threw up all over my computer
