What are the advantages of drinking Soy milk instead of Cows milk?!
Answers: My son has to drink it because he is lactose intolerant, but I think I like the way it tastes better than cows milk, and I've heard its better for you, so I'm considering not buying cows milk at all. Also can I cook with it?
I am a former chef and drink it on occasion and have done some cooking with it, like a few have said the Omega issues are there, it has more fiber, low in fat, higher in proteins and it is more digestable to some people.
As for cooking with it like sour cream and other ingredient it has to heated slowly or not at all used for a thinner, I make soups with it and thicken the soups with the veg bases or corn/potato starches, and then finish with the soya milk, you have to warm it, but do not boil it,it has a tendency to split. I make rice pudding with it to and do the same thing, like with Carnation milk it is best just added at the end.
It isbetter for you and yes you can. Only down fall is more expensive.
soy milk is more healthy. but it tastes werid.
IMNHO - no advantage. Why drink milk at all? Humans, once weaned & eating solid food, have no need for milk (witness your son's lactose intolerance!)
I wouldn't feed any kids (especially boys) that I care about soy - it contains phyto-estrogens. Think about the implications of feeding a young boy a *female* sex hormone.
Lactose intolerant people can usually do some cheese, yoghurt, etc. Get calcium from these, and greens.
Eat hot cereal w/o milk. Drink water.
You can do some cooking with milk subs, but better to learn not to use them . . .
I drink soy b/c milk really grosses me out - haha. Soy comes in a lot of great flavors, and some are even enhanced with omega-3s and extra fiber. I, personally, buy the silk vanilla with omega 3 b/c I don't eat a lot of fish so this offers an alternative source for the important fat.
Soy milk is low in bad cholesterol (cow's milk is relatively high at about 25%DV per 8 oz.), and has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. Additionally, soy milk offers the same amount of calcium as regular milk, yet is much lower in fat and calories. You do, however, need to watch what is added to the soy as many brands offer a LOT of sugar. Soy milk is a good all-around source of all the minerals and vitamins found in cow's milk, without many of the "bad stuff".
EDIT: One small note, I would caution any parent against feeding soy of any form to a growing child. I don't, and won't, give it to my son. Soy contains known estrogens which CAN interfere with the naturally produced hormones in a child's system. It's not something worth messing with when they are young and their bodies are adjusting.
one advantage is that it doesn't contain rGBH which cows milk (in america) does contain. If you are ok with that, there's always lactose free milk which isn't that bad.
but I do enjoy some soy milk sometimes. The bad thing is that sometimes it contains a lot of sugar, but it's low in fat and has plenty of protein.
It probably is better for him, and there is less fat then in regular whole milk has :)
