You need to have some drip ground coffee and possibly paper coffee filters.

There is a slide-out tray which is right above the hot plate. Just pull it straight out toward you. You need a coffee filter in it. Some coffee makers come with a gold reusable filter but others need paper filters. Anyway, in your filter, place your scoops of coffee. I think it's a scoop for every cup. How big the scoop depends on your personal taste. Don't make it too strong at first.

Then on the coffee maker, there is a fresh water well which is accessed by lflipping up a hinged plastic lid on top of your machine. Using your coffee pot as a measuring device, fill coffee pot up with fresh water to the level you need. For instance, fill it to the 4 cup line if that is how much coffee you want to brew. Carefully, pour the water into your coffee well. Close the plastic lid.

Place your empty coffee pot with the drip cap on it, on top of the warmer. You kind of slide it in. When you pour a cup of coffee, always leave the drip cap (which trips a drip lever) on your pot. You don't remove it until you wash the coffee pot.

Plug your unit into the outlet, flip the switch to ON. You turn the switch OFF when you leave your house (for safety) or sooner if the coffee pot is empty of liquids (whichever is first).

The hot plate is a warmer. Be careful not to crack your glass coffee pot -- from experience, replacing it sometimes cost as much - or more - than replacing the whole unit would cost.

We had them at our workplace. Every night, someone had to go into the kitchens and unplug the machines as a fire safety precaution.

Good luck. That's a nice gift.

Wow.
