Question: It seems crazy when we're paying $4.50 for a specialty coffee that in 1975 people were calling for a boycott on coffee as the price for a cup rose to $0.50 from $0.30.

It's called inflation.
The price of everything is rising.

I can buy a cup of coffee in a local convenience store for exactly 50 cents.

There's nothing in a Starbuck's-type coffee drink that makes it "need" to be priced at $4.50 or more. Go to a grocery store. "Store" brand coffee is pretty cheap. I can buy a whole pound of coffee for less than a single serving of mocha-frappa rok-dachino (or whatever its called...)

Starbucks charges that amount simply because people are willing to PAY that amount.

That being said--a decent latte from SB's is a lot tastier than anything I can make out of cheap store brand coffee.
