You can actually roast coffee in a perforated pie pan. The key to coffee roasting is the cooling process. Like meat, when you take it out of the oven, it continues to cook so cooling is the key

For coffee roasters that you can use at home, there are 2 categories: the fluid bed and the drum roaster.

1. Fluid bed -they are lower in cost, probably would not exceed $180.00 and they function like a popcorn machine

2. Drum roaster -they are higher in cost approximately $500 but function like the ones used by the commerical roasting companies.

For home uses, I would recommend fluid bed roaster, like the FreshRoast plus 8.
