Ok a coffee question thats been bugging me for ages?!

Question: Rite... sometimes I go to Starbucks or another cafe for a bit of coffee. The thing is that half of the time, the coffee's BIOLING! Its ridiculously hot, and I honestly can't drink it.

Ok I know its meant to be a 'hot drink,' but its also meant to be a 'drink' - you should be able to drink it. Sometimes I wait around 10 minutes before I have a sip, and its still cold =(.

How can I make it cool down quicker (in a cafe). Or how can I drink it when its hot - is there some sort of secret!

Thanks xD

By law, all prepared beverages must be 180 degrees (to kill bacteria). If it's less than that, the store (regardless of which company it is) can get into trouble.

The best way to cool your drink quickly is to either (a) ask for some extra milk to be added; (b) ask for some ice to be added; (c) remove the lid, blow & stir till it's drinkable.

add an ice cube

Add some ice to it.

Try Costa instead, I usually have to take mine back to be warmed up.

Also, you can always ask for a glass of tap water - it's legally got to be free with Coffee in the uk.
Simple top your coffee up with cold water.

You can always tell them what exact tempature you want it if your talking about an espresso. They'll do that and they should for the price of one of their drinks!

Not sure, sorry!

leave the lid off for a few minutes

you could add an ice cube, but one isn't going to cool it down too fast, and more will just dilute the coffee.

In addition to an ice cube, have you tried taking the top off of the coffee to expose more surface area to room temperature?

There's not too much to do...the good thing is that if you let it cool down too much, sticking it in a microwave won't hurt...unless your cup is made of metal, of course :-)

Add one or 2 ice cubes, add water or milk.
Take the lid off so the coffee can cool down quicker.

blow on it for a few minutes....sorry that wasn't meant to sound dirty

Go to Italy :) Really hot coffee is an American commercial thing, forcing customers to hang around so they can buy other stuff. Italian coffee is meat to be drank standing up and is cold enough to drink in 30 seconds (espresso).

To get the best extraction from coffee it should go through the grounds at 200 to 204 degrees.
BOILING is 212 degrees farh.

They have to keep it hot because or regulations, and also because they cater to the majority. Most people add lots of milk or cream, which cools it down a lot.
Just ask for an ice cube or two in your coffee- all coffee places have an ice machine, and it's a really common request from people who drink their coffee black.

I think you should be telling them, for an ideal coffee they should be using (if it's a milky one) a milk jug and hot steam to warm it, the jug is supposed to have a thermometer on it so it is at optimum temperature as if you use it too hot it can turn the taste of coffee off.

Alternatively, ask for milk/cream separate and you can then add it to taste & cool.

Coffee should never ever be made with boiling water it kills the flavour stone dead. Starbucks should know better. Hot yes, boiling NEVER.

Swap to a cuppaccino or a latte. Because the coffee will be milk rather than water based, it should be at a temperature where you can drink from the cup straight away. If it's two hot to drink as a latte or a cuppaccino, take it back cause it means it's too hot and they've burned the milk.

One great way to cool it off quickly, without adding ice, is this: Often times they give you two cups (you can also ask for an extra cup). Take the lid off and pour the drink back and forth between the cups a few times.

It will cool off just right and you can drink it pretty quickly after that. An added benefit is that it will mix the creamer or sugar (if you add such things).
