Drinking liquids: do liquids other than water count toward how much water we should drink her day?!


Question: I know that men should drink at least 3 liters of water per day, especially in the tropics (where I live). But I also drink juice (and some coffee). Rarely drink alcohol, so this is leading there. Anyway, is the "count" ONLY water, or all liquid. I might mention that I am prone to kidney stones, so this is an important question for me.

needs to be water, sweetened/sugared drinks soak up the good water in your system, in return no water in your system.

There is no scientific proof that drinking 3 litres of water evey day is any healthier than not. Experts generally agree that most people take in enough water just through their usual day-to-day eating and drinking (except alcohol). If you didn't, you would get ill.

If you think your proneness to kidney stones might be a problem then see a doctor before making any radical changes to your diet.

All liquids you take in are part of your 3 litres (except alcohol) . In Ireland people drink an average of 7 cups of tea a day so doctors worry less about the importance of 2 litres of " water" . All fluids count but water is the only thing that you don't have to worry about over indulging!

Its only water that counts. As it is pure and natural, and completely rehydrates you, whereas when you put coffee or tea, or juice etc into your system, it leaves you dehydrated and wanting more. you have kidney stones, stick to water. It is the fountain of life. Of course, its ok to enjoy an occassional cup of coffee or a glass of juice , but make sure that it is followed by 2 glasses of water, to cleanse and prevent dehydration.

Hi, I'm not qualified or anything but I heard somewhere that substituting other fluids for water isn't the answer. I do exactly the same as you as bloody hate water, especially free water from the tap. But I put a slice of lemon in my glass and that will last for up to three glasses of refillable water (one slice of lemon).
Some drinks have acids and ingredients in them that can strip the goodness of the fluid from them so a healthy balance is my suggestion.

Hope you find some qualified advice too though.

Some liquids count but others such as coffee & some carbonated [fizzy] drinks have a diuretic effect [ie: dehydrating].

I couldn't tell you exactly which drinks are best avoided - I'm guessing it may have something to do with caffiene content?

Without a doubt though, water is most hydrating. I'm very lucky, where I live [west yorkshire, england] we have decent quality great tasting water on tap - I'm not sure I'd get my quota if I had to buy bottled water in.

I don't think that anything is as good for you as water. Just being a liquid is not enough. I think it might have something to do with the fact that anything other than water makes your kidneys and liver work, where water actually cleanses or flushes out the kidneys and liver when there is enough of it. I too drink coffee, but other than that and the occasional varying beverage, i drink a ton of water. It will help you to lose weight as well, or maintain...hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.....my old personal trainer used to say that non-stop....i don't miss her lol. I hope this helps a bit. Take Care

all liquids count except alcohol obviously,but as you live in the tropics(lucky you) a good bit of it should be water
