Is there any way to keep the carbonation longer in a 2-liter bottle of soda?!

Question: I am a can drinker who is switching to 2-Liter bottles for financial reason, but I can't seem to keep the fizz for more than a week in a bottle, no matter how tightly I cap it. I wondered if there are any sneaky tricks of the trade, or special contraptions I can buy.

well, you have to use a little knowledge of physics to be able to keep the fizz in.

when you half empty out the 2L bottle, you have a mix of air and soda. what happens is the the carbonation in the soda will leave the soda in order to equalize the internal air pressure. to prevent this, you have to either pressurize the air, or to reduce the volume of the bottle. but don't just squeeze the soda bottle, because all the carbonation will leave the soda and fill up the bottle whole again, and you get super flat soda as a result. i did that one time, and it was a disappointment. if you do squeeze the bottle, make sure to clamp it down so the bottle stays squeezed.

.....they sell special pumps like this to pressurize the air.

if i were you, stick with soda cans, but drnk less.

Squeeze the air out of the bottle before you put the cap on. That't what I do. Hold the sqeeze while you put the cap on. But, a 2 ltr doesn't last a week in my house.

Store the bottle upright in the refridgerator. Laying it down will cause the bottle to decarbonate quicker.....

You can buy a " Pump up" Top for 2 and 3 Liter bottles at and Grocery Store or Wal- Mart. They are very Inexpensive)1 to 2 $_ You screw it on the top of the Bottle and Pump then Back up to Hold In the Carbonation. They work Great, I have several.

There are stoppers that will fit on 2-liter bottles. They have a small plunger type thing in the center that is depressed as you put into the top of the bottle. I have seen them for sale at grocery stores mostly. I also use them in my wine bottles. They will preserve the fizz a few days longer than the cap that comes with the bottle. The last one I bought has a brand name of zyliss on it.

That is my chief complaint also with 2 liter bottles, though I know it would last only a day with me.....it is more as it gets close to the bottom of the bottle, not so much the length of time you store it, I think.
