How do they make decaffinated coffee beans?!

Question: Actually decaf beans start out just like regular coffee beans. To become decaf, there are several processes to remove the caffeine that they can go through, but 2 of them are the most common.

1. Direct method- Basically, the beans are steamed, then they are rinsed with 2 chemicals(not as bad as it sounds!) and then the beans are steamed again.

2. Swiss Water method- Unroasted beans are soaked in hot water which releases the caffeine. Then the water is passed through a filter which traps caffeine molecules and then this is repeated several times. Usually this is the most effective method to remove the caffeine.

Remember, decaf coffee will still have trace amounts of caffeine in them!
