Curious...why do more Caucasians drink cola than people of color?!

Question: I was just talking to my friend Tony (African American) because he says he only drinks Mt. Dew, and my friend Annette (Asian American) only drinks orange soda or Sprite, and they say most people of color drink sodas other than cola drinks. I must say I've found that to be true. It's just interesting and I'm curious...must be a cultural thing? And the other part of the question is...why are white people so raised on cola?

Part of it is behavioral preference - marketing for sodas can actually effect a person's preference. There are also location factors - Georgians tend to prefer Coke, North Carolinans will prefer Pepsi. This tends to be more of a regional thing than anything else - where I am, I see a lot of people drinking just about everything, but only getting picky over which cola they drink as opposed to choosing cola versus a lymon or other drink.

If you'd like some a fun answer, you could consider that Pepsi Cola's ad campaign in China had a horrible translation:
"Come alive with the Pepsi generation" was translated into "Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave" ... probably not the best incentive to drink Pepsi. Coca-Cola's name in China was first read "Kekoukela" but wound up meaning "Bite the wax tadpole" or "Female horse stuffed with wax" depending on dialect. They later researched it and changed the characters to "Kokoukole" meaning "Happiness in the mouth."

For more trivia that could be a factor in your question:
Colas were introduced later than other flavors(late 1880s) , predated by ginger ale, rootbeer, and cream soda. Lymon sodas were not introduced until 1929. Mountain Dew (slang for moonshine) was introduced in the 1940s as a mixer with whiskey. Colas were also seen as a symbol of American power and culture during the Cold War, and communist countries started marketing their own cola drinks, such as the Czech/Slovak Kofola and the Polish Polo-Cockta. There's also a Muslim alternitive, Mecca-Cola as an alternative to the U.S. brands.

because you and your friends are stupid for stereotyping

This is the most rascist question , I have heard in a long time .
People like Coke , because it is delicious ,. not because of their ethnicity . Grow up

you are just stupid. Me being white i drink all types of soda. I drink every kind you can think of from Coca cola to Mt. Dew to Fanta( all Flavors) to Wild Cherry Pepsi to Squirt and the list can go on and on. SO..... please would you like to explain that. And by the way i was raised not to drink soda my mother was against it.

Your statement is completely false, your basing all the information you have on limited knowledge. Not sure who is they? To throw a huge hole in your theory how about Caucasians that don't drink pop at all?

Your sample survey is too small. The truth is, Coke is the number 1 selling soft drink. More people of all races drink it. You just happen to have some friends who don't. Most of us like more than one soft drink anyway. Mmmm, rootbeer.

Well it all started back in 1868. Nathaniel Johnson fresh out of slavery used to get so tired of picking cotton and the unbearable thirst that came with it. After 21 years of unsatisfying thirst he created the first lime soda and what a hit it was. in later years, after seeing the huge success of Nathaniel's hit soda, Thomas Edison decided to start a beverage company of his own. He soon learned after a little research and development that in colder climates people preferred the cola taste to a citrus promptly pattenting his new product. Soon after he overtook New York and the surrounding areas with the cola leaving the citrus drinkers to their preferred thirst quencher in the south.

Contrast?

i am a person of color , latin
and my whole family drinks coke

That's a pretty ignorant question. Thanks for the two points though.

You are actually correct. The African American and Hispanic population purchases more Flavored Soft Drinks than any other group. There are statics to show this. I'm really not sure why this is, but it is a fact. I don't think you are a racist for asking.

Well, I work in the soda business and I do not stereotype people at all. I live and work in a rural county in PA. There is a city in the middle and country on all sides. I've been in this business for several years and have noticed plenty of trends. Of course, I can only say these things about my area, not the entire world.

In areas with an older (usually white) population, they sell large amounts of caffeine free colas and caffeine free diet colas.

In areas with a large number of amish people, they sell almost no sprite, mt dew, sunkist, etc. Birch beer and rootbeer do well however as do colas and diet colas.

In the city, the big sellers are regular coke and pepsi, mountain dew, sprite, sunkist, fanta, and rootbeer. Sales of diet sodas are virtually non-existant and anything fruit flavored does especially well.
