Why does Canada sell their milk in bags?!

Question: not jugs or cartons

Answers: not jugs or cartons

It's not just Canada anymore. At my son's school (in California) the milk comes in a bag - not the carton from my childhood.
I think it takes up less space during shipping, therefore it's less expensive that way.
It sure looks strange tho'

We find that it tastes better.

because thats where it comes from

Wtf. I'm Canadian, from British Columbia, and our fricken milk is in a jug or carton. >_> Don't stereotype us Canadians.

because they're nuts

wait what? !
wow..milk in a bag, kinda like a cow but instead of a bag its skin. lol

but i think it preserves it better than a carton, (not sure about it compared to jugs) and they think it tastes better

in my opinion its like how people eat duck for dinner *bleh* it tastes good to one person but not the other.

kinda just their way of saying "we got style"
its just not like our american "style"

p.s. how i use the quotation marks with "style" lol

Here in Ontario, we do sell it in bags but also in cartons. I am sure it's not because of style, what the hell do the corporations care about style. Plastic is used not only in Canada but in many other countries probably because plastic keeps the milk fresher for a longer time, and it's cheaper to use plastic than cardboard.

Well, it chills the milk faster and easier to keep bacteria at bay. Also, packaging is cheaper. All you have to do is add the bag to a special pitcher found at most supermarkets. Some areas of canada do sell their milk in other packaging besides bags. In addition you get 3 bags or so that equal one gallon in which keeps the milk fresher and its easier to handle. You lug a small amout of milk when needed vs. having to take out a gallon. Also, it uses less plastic than a jug which is better for earth. In addition it's better on fridge space, you can put the sealed bags not in use in the fridge drawer or bottom shelf to ready to use. It also just takes better than it does from a jug or carton.

Milk is sold in jugs and cartons in Canada as well, though bagged milk is more popular in Quebec and Ontario. It's cheaper to package, easier to transport, and keeps the milk cooler during transport.

All those Canadians who answered are correct, plus it is easier to store, is easier to transport and is more environmentally effiecent.

We do have it is plastic jugs, cardboard cartons and few specialty dairys do a glass bottle in the old style, I am a former chef and we have had it in bags since the 70's when we changed over to the metric system, there are 3 bags in each larger bag in a 4 liter measurement so each small bag has 1.3 liters. And in some store they have goat milk in the same packaging.

Here in Western Canada, I have not seen milk sold in bags for 20 years.

When it was sold, one could also buy a special plastic holder that allowed you to put the bag into the holder, snip off the tip of the bag's corner and then pour it very conveniently.

But I never, ever heard a good explanation of why milk companies switched to them in the first place, and then switched away from them after about five or 10 years of selling them.
