Tea bags: a portent for the end of civilisation?!

Question: Why have tea bags taken over? Surely we can be civilised enough to make the tea properly?

Hear hear old boy, I wouldn't let Jenkins my butler make it any other way. He did once try to pass off a "PG tip" (I believe it was called) as earl grey! The horse whipping that followed was particularly vicious. Tip top (Cuppa)

Snip them open !

i think because of the convience of just putting the tea bag in a cup verses putting tea into a teaspoon or tea ball? i think it's just for conviences sake really!

I don`t use them.
By the time you have cut them open you might as well have used tea leaves in the first place!

Hear hear! We should open up the next chain store called "Afternoon tea" and have the full works...pick your own leaf, tea maids, tea pots, scones and jam!!

The tea bags' attempt at world domination is in protest over work conditions. They're sick of being dumped in a shabby old cracked mug when they could be floating around a nice porcelain teapot with floral motif.

I completely agree, and snipping them open isn't good enough. They are filled with tasteless dust.

Ahh... it's tough to be such a snob, but it is a fate i am glad to suffer! Leave Lipton to the lemmings!!!

don't knock it,it's a great idea,enjoy your tea.
i drink gallons

Convenience mostly. A few of us do like our loose leaf tea, and a few of us like to learn more about tea's history, tea's culture, and the many intricacies of tea. The rest use tea bags.

i have never drank tea or cofee in my life ( i think tea looks like dirty hot water, and the smell of coffee makes me want to throw up) but yeah my friend 2 year old boy has tea ( cold tea for that matter) i just dont understand t and ice tea well i think thats uck tooo!! i think tea bags are more convienant. and cheaper

Well, aren't you highfalutin? Some of us don't have a proper kitchen with a kettle, stove, and teapot at work, but we still need our tea fixes. Teabags aren't perfect, but they're much simpler to use when I'm out and about. Some tea producers are putting higher-quality tea (not tea dust) in bags nowadays, too.

When I want a really nice cup of tea at home, though, I like using loose tea leaves.
